Heike Henkel, born on 5 May 1964, was for more than a decade one of the world’s best track and field athletes. In three consecutive years, she won the European Championships, the World Championships and an Olympic gold medal, a high jump achievement that remains unsurpassed to this day. She was also elected track and field athlete of the year and sportswoman of the year.
