Biography

Markus Blum (1974) grew up in Lucerne. After his education as a draftsman, he moved to Davos, a small "City" in the Grisons mountains of switzerland, where he became a qualified snow sports instructor. Beside switzerland he also trained skiers for many years in New Zealand. As a speed skier, he tested the skis of many Swiss athletes. One of his biggest sportive success was winning the speed skiing endurance world contest -the 50K of Coronet Peak - with his two Teammates.

Many trips to different countries followed. So it is not surprising that he met his future wife Sabrina for the first time in Australia.

A highlight: When the two paddled through the Yukon Flats in 2008, Markus made the marriage proposal to Sabrina in Gumboots and Lifejacket. Sabrina was pregnant at the time. When their little daughter Amira was born in autumn 2008 the young family soon embarks on their biggest adventure:

Inspired by the Bestseller "The Snow Child" of adventurer Nicolas Vanier, the Swiss family goes on a long trip following the footsteps of the snow child deep into the Canadian Wilderness. On a farm, they first have to learn the vital dealings about riding and packing horses. Together with their 18-month-old daughter and five newly purchased horses they soon after take off and ride through the magnificent mountain scenery, without meeting a single person.

Even though the heavy packet horses carrying their food supplies the family has to rely on mother nature. Often they feed on what they have caught or hunted: fish, grouse and ptarmigan. On their long journey they made countless adventures until they finally find the beautifully situated small log cabin at Lake Thukada.

In the past years, the family has not only lived summers and autumn, but also during the harsh canadian winter and risky spring month in the Cassiar Mountains spending many months in a little log cabin on Thukada Lake. During their wintering in 2011/12 Sabrina is pregnant. Facing temperatures at -50 ° C below, without electricity, running water and over 200 km away from the nearest neighbor, they experience the primordial life first hand. In summer of 2011, the family leaves Switzerland for an uncertain period of time, moving to Canada, where they started Guiding horse-trekkings and wildlife tours. Swiss Television SRF DOK accompanied them for the Documentry "Auf und davon"

At present, the Blum Family has its point of life back in the Davos mountains where Markus works in the sportsindustry and also prepares the horse-trekkings, seaplane- and wilderness tours in Canada. With the lecture "Canada - life in the wilderness" he fascinated a broad audience. With stunning images and exciting film parts Markus Blum tells her authentic story of the lonely Canadian Wilderness.
